Tant Bella Grobler – Ons Boervolk

One particularly colourful person was the famous Tant Bella, who lived at Ermelo and later on the farm Victoria's Poort. She was always dressed in brown velvet and travelled in a black spider. During the Boer War, she played a prominent pam in supplying the Boer Forces with food and ammunition. She was the vice-president of the first women's branch of the National Party in the Transvaal.

After the death of her husband, Stephanus Grobler, Tant Bella moved to South-West Africa, where she farmed alone in the Mopani forests in the Outjo district, many miles from the nearest neighbour. At night when lions prowled around the kraals, she went out with her lantern and her gun to chase the marauders. She shot several lions. She was buried in Windhoek.

Scripture

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 121:1-4
