A good colour portrait of Boer War General Lord Frederick Roberts in a red military uniform. Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, PC (30 September 1832 – 14 November 1914) was a distinguished Anglo-Irish soldier and one of the most successful commanders of the Victorian era.

 Destroying the Boervolk (Boer People)

The enormous logistical demands of Lord Roberts's army: 30 000 pounds of maize, 13 000 pounds of flour, 400 pounds of salt and 2 500 pounds of sugar, for example resulted in an official policy of requisition from the countryside - which was stripped clean. This situation was compounded by the mistaken centralisation of transport arrangements by Roberts that worsened rather than improved the movement of supplies.

Then, to cap it all, came the celebrated ambush by Christiaan de Wet of a huge British supply convoy at Waterval on 15 February 1900,  that left his troops on the brink of starvation. On 28 May 1900 an English newspaper commented that 'from end to end the Orange River Colony lies ruined and starving'.
