Paper Bombs

Helen Bradford concludes: 'The savage "vernielzucht" shocked numerous observers - and was of profound significance to Boer men. The Boers, both on the military and domestic fronts, were also bombarded with a series of carrot-and-stick proclamations between February and June 1900. These proclamations were known as 'paper bombs' in Boer circles. By August 1900 Roberts was turning the screws tighter, and there was open talk of the ruination of the country, if necessary, to bring the war to an end.
