Officers Dress of Boer Commanders

As early as 1898, a group of Transvaal commandants asked the government for uniforms or sashes to distinguish them from their men. Due to financial constraints uniforms could not be supplied, but a sash was allowed. Photos show some commandants wearing silk sashes, usually green in the Transvaal and orange or yellow in the Free State. Some sashes were also edged with red, white and blue lines. To further distinguish them from their men, officers in both republics often wore either a darker suit or even claw-hammer tailcoats and a top hat. The top hats were usually low crowned and were either the silk topper or the softer felt version. In some cases, officers could only be distinguished from their men by a pair of binoculars and/or a side arm.
