Transvaal, President Thomas Francois Burgers Medallion

Brief description:  Here is a circuler medallion commissioned by the Transvaal Numismaic Society at their 5th Convention (6 to 13 April 1974). Normally found as a set of three (gold, silver, bronze) medallions.

It is recorded that 150 sets of the medals were minted. An unknown number were issued in silver and bronze.

Edge:     Plain. Stamped with the issue number and “SAM”. Gold medal with 9ct hallmark. Silver medal with sterling hallmark.

Obverse:   Head of President Burgers, left (as on the Burgers Pond from the ZAR coinage). Initials: “T.S.” below the bust. The legend above: “THOMAS FRANCOIS BURGERS” and below: “1874 1974”.

Reverse:   On a concave field, a high-relief rendition of the Cullinan Diamond on which is superimposed miniatures of four gold coins that circulated in South Africa:
